Fifth Grade Coming Back to SMA in Fall 2017

School Updates

San Marcos Academy will offer a fifth grade class for day students beginning in the fall of 2017.

The addition of a fifth grade will complement the school’s current sixth through twelfth grade program and will mark a return to lower school training at the 109-year old Academy.

“We expanded our Middle School in the fall of 2015 to include a sixth grade for the first time in about ten years,” Academy President Jimmie Scott said. “That addition was so successful that we began to consider the feasibility of further expanding our program to include a Lower School in 2017. Our Trustees agreed that the timing was right to offer fifth grade as a first step in re-establishing a Lower School at the Academy.”

Between the 1920s and early 1980s, Mr. Scott explained, the Academy’s academic program included elementary grades, along with middle school and high school grades, for both day and boarding students. SMA traditionally designated these programs as Upper School (grades 9-12), Middle School (grades 6-8) and Lower School (grades 1-5). The lower grades were gradually phased out, however, leaving only the middle and upper school programs in place for the past 35 years.

“In adding a fifth grade,” Mr. Scott added, “we will return to our historical configuration of offering lower, middle and upper school instruction. We will not be including the lower grades in our boarding program, however; these classes would be open to day students only.”

Dr. Brian Guenther, Associate Academic Dean for the Academy’s Middle School, will be the administrator for the fifth grade, which will be a self-contained classroom. Dr. Guenther served seven years as the Head of School for The Master’s School of San Marcos before coming to the Academy in the fall of 2015.

“Parents can expect a high quality program focused on excellence in academics while preparing students for the rigor of the middle and upper school programs. SMA’s accreditation and our approval by the Texas Education Agency allow our students the unique opportunity to have a Christ-centered education while exceeding state standards in curriculum.”
