Summer Camps: Staying Fit and Getting Ready for 2017-18

Summer Camps at SMA

Summer provides the opportunity for students to relax and take a break from the stress of school, but it is also a good time to plan ahead and prepare for the year to come. This is especially true for student athletes or those who want to try out a new sport in a non-threatening environment, such as a summer camp program.

San Marcos Academy is offering several summer camps for sports and conditioning that are open not only to SMA students, but also any other students in the San Marcos area. A complete list of the camp with dates and costs is provided on the Academy website.

Summer Camps: All-Sports Conditioning

Coming up at the end of May will be an All-Sports Conditioning Camp for students in grades 9-12. This camp will begin May 30 and end July 7, with sessions every Monday-Thursday morning from 8-9:30 a.m. in the Academy’s Mafrige Fitness Center. Led by Chase Esmiol and Athletic Director Les Davis, the camp will focus on helping boys and girls develop their strength, speed and quickness. Even those who aren’t highly involved in a specific sport can benefit from this camp as a means of improving overall health and fitness.

A similar Conditioning Camp for younger boys and girls, grades 5-8, will also be offered at SMA June 26-July 27. This camp will meet in the evenings from 5-6:30 p.m. on Monday-Thursday. Coach Barrett Matthews will guide the younger group in a course of strength, speed and agility drills to improve their overall fitness as they look ahead to participation in middle school sports.

Students who may have a conflict with the session dates for their grade-level session can contact Coach Davis about attending the alternate session. SMA will make every effort to accommodate those who want to attend a conditioning camp!

Summer Camps: Tennis, Football and Baseball

Also on the schedule this summer are camps for tennis, middle school football and baseball.

The tennis camp is set for June 12-16 from 8:30-11 a.m. at the Academy tennis courts. Coaches Matt Contreras and Tamra Howe will lead this camp for students of all playing levels going into grades 5-12. Register soon to get the early bird discount! A sibling discount is also available for this camp.

The SMA baseball camp is coming up June 26-29 and will include a junior division and senior division. Coach Danny Davis and his varsity coaching staff will be on hand to teach hitting, fielding and position-specific techniques. The junior division camp will be for boys in grades 5-8 and will run from 9-11 a.m. The senior division, for students in grades 9-12, will run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Last but not least, our SMA middle school football staff will offer a football camp for boys entering grades 6-8 the week of July 31-August 3 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. This will be a great lead-in for the middle school football team as they start their second season next year.
