This summer, Mrs. Amy Nighbert, our librarian, has been working to establish a new partnership with the San Marcos Public Library.
Ms. Diane Insley, San Marcos Public Library Director, is making many of the library’s resources available to all Academy students, whether they are day or boarding students. Even our international students are being treated like true San Martians! You are probably wondering exactly what kind of resources will be available.
New Library Resources for Our Students
1) Students may now use all of the Public Library’s databases. San Marcos Public Library hosts an enormous database, made available to all public libraries and public school libraries by the state of Texas. Texshare includes numerous academic databases, as well as full text magazines and newspapers.
2) Students will have free access to the Learning Express Library which includes test prep of all kinds (SAT, ACT, THEA, TOEFL and more) as well as interest assessments and career readiness tests.
3) Students will have access to the tens of thousands of audio books and digital books, fiction and non-fiction, through the RB Digital and Overdrive services.
All of these services will augment our current library holdings to provide an even richer selection of academic and recreational materials, and it’s just in the knick of time! The SMA English Department is launching an Independent Reading Program this year for all upper school students. In addition to in-class reading, each student will be reading a book of his/her choice each grading period. Having the additional Public Library resources will ensure that students have ample selection to find books they will enjoy, helping them develop a deeper love for reading.
San Marcos Public Library: Get a Card!
Mrs. Nighbert urges all SMA students who are Hays County residents, as well as Caldwell and Guadalupe counties residents who live in the SMCISD district, to swing by the San Marcos Public Library for their free library card! Mrs. Nighbert will work with all other students to ensure they have temporary access to the digital books, audio books and other Public Library resources when needed.
Let’s get reading!
