Who’s New? Meet the Additions to our Staff, Faculty

School Updates

When students return in August, they will see some new faces on campus and will also discover some familiar faces in new positions.

New Faces on the Faculty

New to the faculty this year is Mr. Andrew Booth, who will teach sophomore and senior English courses. Mr. Booth has previously taught IB English language and literature at the Carlucci American International School of Lisbon. He holds a BS degree in secondary education from Crown College and a master’s degree in theology from Liberty University. He is also currently working on a master’s degree in English at Texas State.

Another new addition to the teaching staff is SFC Timothy Scott, the new Junior ROTC Army Instructor, who will replace Vincent Jines. SFC Scott holds a BS degree in criminal justice from Columbia Southern University (Alabama) and previously served as the Army Instructor at Cigarroa High School in the Laredo ISD. He was a medic during his active duty service in the U.S. Army.

Returning to the faculty this year  will be Mrs. Mattie Howard, who will teach theatre. Mrs. Howard will also continue to work in the Admissions Office as the Assistant Director of Admissions.

Mr. Dale Nave is also coming back to the Academy after teaching for a year in the San Marcos CISD. Mr. Nave will return to the ESL classroom, taking the position that Peter Browne filled last year.

New to the staff and the faculty will be Dr. Joel Bach, who will take the position of barn manager, replacing Jenn Brown. Dr. Bach will also teach an equine science course as a high school elective. He holds a PhD in ecosystem science and management from Texas A&M as well a master of science degree in resource economics and a bachelor’s degree in land and animal science wildfire ecology from New Mexico State University.

Mrs. Pam Smith will be joining our health services staff as a nurse, replacing Mrs. Paula Scott, who retired at the end of last year. Mrs. Smith is the wife of Michael Smith, our Campus Safety Officer. She has training in both dental hygiene and nursing with two associate’s degrees from Lamar University.

In the Athletic Department, Coach Danny Davis will be taking over as head baseball coach this year. He replaces Coach Peter Garza, who retired at the end of last year. For those who are counting, this will be the fourth Coach Davis on our staff, which includes Athletic Director Les Davis, teacher/coach Glenn Davis, and Assistant Track Coach Courtney Davis! So, we will all try not to get them confused. Coach Danny Davis, who recently coached at Hill Country Christian School (six-man state champions last year) will also be an assistant football coach for the varsity Bears and will assist Coach Glenn Davis with our middle school football team.

Another new face in athletics will be our new girls soccer coach, Taylor Thigpen. Coach Thigpen graduated from Hays High School in Buda and received her bachelor’s degree in finance and economics from Hardin-Simmons University. She played collegiate soccer and was named an All-America player in 2013. She is currently studying to take her CPA exam.

New and Familiar Faces in the Dormitories

Familiar names will be taking on new positions in the dormitories, with the appointment of Mr. Chuck Rotan as Boys Dormitory Director and Mrs. Christy Guenther as Girls Dormitory Director. Mr. Rotan returns to the Academy to fill the position vacated by Mr. Derrick Ouellette, who plans to enter seminary this fall. Mrs. Guenther, who worked part-time in the dormitory last year, will replace Ms. Judy Behrens as director for the Girls Dormitory. Also moving up in the girls dormitory is Ms. Naomi Gonzales, a former resident assistant, who will replace Ms. Heather Brown as a girls hall director.

Joining the boys dormitory staff as hall directors are John Newman and James Portis, who are both returning to SMA. Newman is an SMA graduate from 1984 who holds his undergraduate degree in criminal justice and education from Stephen F. Austin University. Portis worked as a hall director at SMA from 2001-2004. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University in exercise science and mathematics.

Welcome to all of our new staff and faculty and welcome back to those returning to SMA!
